Kalevankarhu by CanisAlbus Kalevankarhu by CanisAlbus

The bear (karhu in Finnish), King of the Forest, was the most respected animal of the ancient Finnish forests and still is today. The Birth of the Bear is a very old, probably paleolithic myth having it's roots in totemistic relationship between the powerful animal and the primitive man.
As such the bear was the symbol of the whole tribe and a sacred animal. For this reason in some areas it was never hunted. Shamanism was also closely connected to the bear and sometimes the bear was seen as the spirit of a shaman.

That's some splendid inkwork! I really love the different hues of brown here, and as always how you stylize and break down body parts!

this beautiful animal it's very appreciated in my country too...as far as I know the number of brown bears in Romania is the largest in Europe and we have a some interesting traditions and myths about them...you really made me courious now I'm starting to read more about finnsh myths...About the drawing: looks like sometimes you need just a wooden straw and some ink to do something nice! I really like it!

Wow. the Finnish word for bear is 1000000x better than the english word. This is absolutely stunning. They are truly incredible animals, they eminate power, but also peace, and you've captured that beautifully.

Se, kuinka monta karhua tarkoittavaa sanaa suomen kielessä on, kertoo vähän siitä kuinka paljon meillä nalleja rakastetaan. <3

This is very cool and would be a great tattoo in my opinion. ;p
Also, always is great to learn new stuff about other countries, I like the Finnish vision of the bears as something sacred and not as a beast as normal people see them ( I know wild animals acts by instincts but is not good to "satanize" some depredators).

About the artwork, I think it's beautiful, love the pose and expression of the bear, very serene.

I apologize for my bad English.

I saw something done by you in the same style as this a while back. I really liked the way it looked it the thumbnail but I couldn't actually find it when I went to the folder it was in T_T

It's nice the see the same style here. I really enjoy it. Great job as always :>

Bear is very respected in many cultures, indeed. I wonder if there are any regions, where Wolf is respected that much...
